Musketeers' seven match unbeaten streak snapped in Queens
QUEENS, N.Y. – No. RV/19 Xavier men's soccer saw a seven match unbeaten streak come to a halt on Saturday, falling 3-0 against St. John's at Belson Stadium.
Coming off back-to-back results against Top 15 opponents this week, the Musketeers fall to 5-2-2 (1-1 BIG EAST) with the result and will now have a week to recover before hosting Providence next Saturday as league play continues.
St. John's moved its own unbeaten streak to five straight, surging to 5-2-1 and 2-0 in the BIG EAST with its first result against Xavier since the two became BIG EAST foes.
The Red Storm controlled the match statistically, leading 15-3 in shots and got three first half goals before largely holding serve in the second half to clinch the win.
"Every few years you have a game like this. Spotting an own goal on the road in the ninth minute didn't help, followed by a restart goal right after and then having a man sent off all in the first 30 minutes made for a long night. I thought we out-competed them in the second half and handled a difficult night fairly well. We just went 29 days without a loss and handled four games in 13 days, including two against Top 15 opponents. We were a tired team tonight and St. John's had a full week off to prepare for us. I think the loss, coupled with a week to rest and reset as well as have a few good days of practice bodes well for us as we embark on the second half of our season."
• Xavier was held scoreless for the first time this season and moves to 2-1-2 on the road this season.
• It was the first shutout against XU in 13 matches, dating back to Oct. 18, 2016. Including exhibitions and spring games, it was the first time in 21 matches the Musketeers have been held scoreless.
• XU's unbeaten streak of seven straight was snapped. It was the longest for the Musketeers since a nine-game spurt in 2014.
• The loss snapped a four match unbeaten streak against the Red Storm. XU still holds a 3-2-1 edge in the all-time series.
• The Musketeers held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
• Curtis Hansford received a red card in the 34th minute, forcing XU to play down a man while already trailing in the match.
• The red card was the first since 2015 for Xavier.
9' | St. John's 1-0 | The Red Storm jumped in front early, getting a goal off a rebound in the box by Jack Shearer.
25' | St. John's 2-0 | Jack Shearer secured a brace with his second tally of the night, finishing off a one touch goal to the back post.
36' | St. John's 3-0 | Filippo Ricupati scored SJU's third goal, heading the ball to himself in the box and making an athletic play to send the shot near post with his right foot.
• Xavier returns home to face Providence as BIG EAST play continues next Saturday, Sept. 30 at XU Soccer Complex. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
