Four-Goal First Half Propels Men's Soccer to 4-1 Win Over Providence

Samson Sergi scored twice in first in first five minutes to lead Musketeers
CINCINNATI - Redshirt sophomore Samson Sergi found the back of the net twice in the first five minutes to lead Xavier men's soccer to a 4-1 win over Providence. Xavier improves to 6-2-2 overall and 2-1-0 in BIG EAST play.
Xavier took the lead in the second minute and added the eventual game-winner less than two minutes later.
Providence (2-7-1; 0-2-1 BIG EAST) would cut the advantage to one on a penalty kick in the 15th minute, but the Musketeers tallied twice before the break to take the 4-1 lead into halftime.
• XU improved to 23-12-4 in BIG EAST play since joining the conference ahead of the 2013 season.
• Xavier's four goals are the most for the Musketeers in 2017. The four-tally evening also marks the most in a single half and for a complete match since scoring four in the second period against UC in 2016, a 4-2 win over the Bearcats.
• Samson Sergi's two goals in the first half add to his team high in tallies, bringing his total for the season to seven. Sergi also leads the Musketeers with 14 points on the season.
• Sergi's two tallies set new career marks for the red-shirt sophomore in goals (2) and point (4) in a single game.
• Matt Vasquenza's goal was his third of the season, bringing his career total to 19. Vasquenza also picked up an assist on Sergi's second tally, bringing his career point total to 56, moving the senior forward past Martin Hernandez for 12th most in program history.
• Samuel Buzzas' goal in the 40th minute was the first of his Xavier career.
• Cameron Taylor picked up a point on the assist for Sergi's first goal of the evening, bringing his season total to 10, third most on the team.
• Zachary Nelson made six saves in-goal, matching a career-high set against Kentucky on Sept. 20.
• PC outshot the Musketeers 19-6 and took 10 corner kicks to just one for XU. The single corner kick marks a season-low for Xavier.
