Baseball Downs Southern 6-1 to Start Weekend Road Trip in Dallas

DALLAS - Xavier baseball got strong pitching from Matt Kent and Christian Glass in addition to a homer by Matt Warkentin, downing Southern 6-1 to start a weekend road trip on Friday at Horner Ballpark.
Xavier improved to 9-15 with the win, while Southern moved to 7-18.

• Xavier returns to action immediately, playing Dallas Baptist at Horner Ballpark.

• XU collected 12 hits and four players had multi-hit games.
• Matt Warkentin led the Musketeers offensively, going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a solo homer. The second inning shot was his fifth of the season.
• Ryan Altenberger (2-for-4, R, RBI), Nate Soria (2-for-5, R) and Andrew Sexton (2-for-3, R, RBI) also had two hit days for XU.
• Conor Grammes (1-for-4, BB) extended his hitting streak to a team-best nine games.
• Altenberger and Grammes are tied for the team lead with nine game reached base streaks.
• Chris Givin (1-for-4, R), Allbry Major (1-for-3, 2 RBI) and Natale Monastra (1-for-5) also added hits for the Musketeers.

• Junior Matt Kent got the start and went five innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits while striking out two. The righty picked up his second win of the season. Kent has now lowered his ERA nearly eight points in his last three outings (two starts, one relief appearance), throwing 18.1 innings and allowing just one earned run and striking out 16.
• Senior Christian Glass came out of the bullpen to finish the game, tossing four scoreless innings with three strikeouts to pick up his first career save.Â

FIRST INNING | Ryan Altenberger led off with a walk, going to third on a double to left by Chris Givin. Joe Gellenbeck followed with a sacrifice fly to left to give XU a 1-0 lead. After a one out single by Conor Grammes moved Givin to third, Allbry Major lofted a sacrifce fly to left to make it 2-0.
SECOND INNING | With one out, Matt Warkentin launched a solo homer to left field to make it 3-1.
SIXTH INNING | The inning began with back-to-back singles to left by Nate Soria and Matt Warkentin before a wild pitch moved both up a bag. Andrew Sexton batted next and singled to right field, scoring Soria to make it 4-1. Ryan Altenberger batted next, following a Sexton steal with a double to right to bring home Warkentin. After Chris Givin worked a walk, two Musketeers were retired before Allbry Major was plunked with the bases loaded to make it 6-1.
