Conor Grammes had a career-high 11 strikeouts in five inning start

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball closed out the first home series of the season with a 10-2 loss over the Evansville Purple Aces on Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers, who took two of three against Evansville, fall to 8-14 on the year.

The Musketeers trailed early in the game when EU went up 2-0 in the top of the third. Xavier found a spark in the bottom of the fifth on a Jake Shepski RBI single, scoring Conor Grammes to cut the lead back to one, 2-1. UE added runs in the final three innings, while Xavier's scoring drought lasted until a Luke Franzoni RBI single, scoring Natale Monastra in the eighth.

XU AT THE PLATE

Senior Chris Givin had an early single in the first inning. Givin has been on base in 21 of Xavier's 22 games.
Junior Conor Grammes had one hit, one walk and one run on three at bats.
Junior Natale Monastra had one hit and one run in the competition.
Shepski earned an RBI single in the fifth inning. The graduate student also had one of Xavier's two stolen bases on the day.
Kody Darcy got on base for the second-straight day, going 1-2 at the plate in today's competition.
Luke Franzoni had an RBI single in the eighth inning.

XU ON THE MOUND

Grammes got the start for the Musketeers marking a career-high 11 strike outs in five complete innings pitched. Grammes allowed only three hits and two runs.
Trey Schram came in to start the fifth inning. Schramm gave the Musketeers one inning where he delivered one strikeout and two groundouts.
Henry Miller entered the game for 0.1 innings and gave up two hits and two runs.
Trevor Olson faced five batters, striking one batter out looking.
Taylor Williams finished the eighth with one strikeout and gave up two hits.
Nathan Berg took the mound to close the game, striking out one batter.

HOW THEY SCORED

FIFTH INNING | With one out, Grammes singled to center field and advanced to second on a stolen base. A Shepski RBI to right field scored Grammes, cutting the deficit to one run.
EIGHTH INNING | Monastra crossed home after leading off the eighth with a walk. The catcher advanced to second on a groundout by Ryan Altenberger and scored on a Franzoni RBI single.
