Lane Flamm pitches four innings of scoreless relief to pick up second win

DAYTON, Ohio - Xavier baseball erased a five-run deficit to take a 9-8 win at Wright State in extra innings on Tuesday. Xavier moves to 9-14 on the season after Wright State jumped out to the early lead, but two big innings along with four innings of scoreless relief from Lane Flamm, helped send the game to the 10th inning where the Musketeers manufactured the game-winning run.

Wright State took the two-run lead in the bottom of the second, which Xavier cut in half in the top of the third with a solo shot by Conor Grammes. A three-run homer and an inside the park home run added four to the Raiders' lead in the bottom of the third.

A four-hit fourth for the Musketeers fueled a three run inning to cut the WSU lead back to two. The Raiders added another run in the bottom of the fifth, but a four-run top of the sixth put the Musketeers on top.

WSU tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the sixth, with both teams going scoreless in the seventh, eighth and ninth to force extra innings. Xavier took the one-run lead in the top of the 10th to claim the 9-8 win.

Xavier returns home tomorrow to host Wright State tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

XU AT THE PLATE

Conor Grammes' third-inning home run was his fourth of the season, extending his on-base streak to seven games. Grammes finished 2-of-5 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a walk.
Chris Givin's fourth-inning triple was his second of the season and 11th of his Xavier career, moving him into a tie for fourth place in Xavier's records for career triples, matching John McCambridge (2008-11). Givin went 2-of-5 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored, the game-winner.
Matt Warkentin made his first apperance in a week, going 3-of-4 at the plate and collecting a walk, with two runs scored.
Jack Housinger (2-4; 1 BB), Natale Monastra (2-5) and Luke Franzoni (2-5) also had multi-hit games. Franzoni's three RBI led the Musketeers.
Eight Musketeers got on base, collecting 14 hits and five walks. Six Musketeers had multi-hit games.

XU ON THE MOUND

Marko Boricich started on the mound, pitching three innings, allowing six runs on five hits with one walk and a pair of strike-outs.
Sam Czabala pitched two innings, allowing one run on three hits with one strike out.
Damien Richard pitched the sixth, allowing one run on one hit.
Lane Flamm came in, in the seventh, pitching four scoreless innings, striking out three with three hits and a walk. Flamm picked up the win, his second of the season.

HOW THEY SCORED

THIRD INNING | With two outs, Conor Grammes sent a shot over the left field wall to cut into a two-run WSU lead, 2-1.

FOURTH INNING | With one out in the inning, Natale Monastra doubled to left center field. Matt Warkentin singled through the left side to send Monastra to third. Luke Franzoni singled to the pitcher to bring Monastra home, cutting WSU's lead to four, 6-2. Chris Givin came to the plate with two outs, Franzoni on first and Warkentin on second, hitting a triple to right center field to clear the bases and cut the WSU lead to two, 6-4.

SIXTH INNING | Warkentin doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. A Franzoni home run brought in two runs to cut the WSU lead to one, 7-6.
After Andrew Sexton reached on a fielding error, he advanced to second on a sac bunt by Givin, and took third on a Jack Housinger single to left center. With Sexton on third and Housinger on second after a wild pitch, a balk brought Sexton home to tie the game 7-7 and bring Housinger to third.
Grammes walked to put runners on the corners. Ryan Altenberger flied out to left field to bring Housinger home and give the Musketeers the 8-7 lead.

TENTH INNING | Givin led off the inning with a single to center field, then stole second to get into scoring position with no outs. A sac bunt by Jack Housinger allowed Givin to take third and Grammes singled to third base to bring home the winning run, 9-8.
