Six-Run Eighth Propels Musketeers Past Red Storm

Matt Warkentin hits a grand slam for his sixth home run of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. - A Matt Warkentin grand slam fueled a six-run eighth inning for the Musketeers, helping Xavier move to 4-0 in BIG EAST play with an 11-8 win in game one at St. John's.  Xavier moved to 13-21 overall.
St. John's took a three-run lead in the first two innings, and maintained the three run advantage by answering Xavier's top of the fith run. Xavier scored four in the sixth to take the lead, but a pair of runs for SJU in the seventh put the Red Storm back ahead, headed to the eighth.
A solo home run for Luke Franzoni to lead off the eighth inning tied the game and the Musketeers plated five more, including four off of Warkentin's grand slam, to take control of the game, 11-6. St. John's scored a pair in the bottom of the eighth to set the final score at 11-8.
Game two with the Red Storm is set for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

FIFTH INNING | Conor Grammes reached on a fielder's choice after a one-out walk by Andrew Sexton. Grammes took second on a failed pick-off attempt and took third on a wild pitch. A Jake Shepski single brought Grammes home to cut the SJU lead to two, 3-1.
SIXTH INNING | Matt Warkentin got aboard on an error, Chris Givin singles to left field and Natale Monastra walked to load the bases with one out. With two outs, Luke Stephenson, pinch hitting in the No. 9 hole, hit a double to left field to clear the bases and tie the game, 4-4.
With Stephenson still on second and two outs, Conor Grammes singled up the middle to score the go-ahead run, 5-4.
EIGHTH INNING | After SJU retook the lead in the seventh, a lead-off home run for Luke Franzoni tied the game, 6-6. Monastra followed Franzoni's homer with a triple, and Kody Darcy hit a single up the middle to bring Monastra home and put Xavier back ahead, 7-6.
After Conor Grammes was intentionally walked, Jake Shepski took a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Matt Warkentin hit a grand slam to put Xavier ahead 11-6.

- Matt Warkentin's eighth-inning grand slam added to his team-high home run tally, brining it to six. Warkentin went 2-of-5 at the plate and scored a pair of runs.
- Luke Stephenson picked up three RBIs with a bases-loaded double while pinch hitting in the sixth inning. Stephenson came around to score as well.
- Conor Grammes went 2-of-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and collecting an RBI. Grammes also collected a pair of walks, one intentional.
- Luke Franzoni hit his fifth home run of the season, finishing 2-of-4 at the plate, with a walk.
- Natale Monastra went 1-of-4 with a walk at the plate, hitting his second triple of the season. Monastra scored a pair of runs for the Musketeers.
- Kody Darcy hit an RBI single to bring Monastra home, picking up the RBI. Darcy went 1-of-4, with a walk, and scored a run for the Musketeers.Â
- Jake Shepski and Chris Givin each contributed a hit and scored a run for the Musketeers.
- Xavier finished with 11 hits and eight walks.

- Damien Richard went 5.1 innings in the start, finishing with one strike out and four earned runs on eight hits and one walk.
- Trevor Olson came on in the sixth with a runner in scoring position, picking up the two outs to preserve Xavier's lead. Olson finished with three strikeouts, and allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in 2.0 innings pitched. Olson picked up the win, his first of the season.
- Trey Schramm pitched 0.2 innings, facing the minimum and striking out one.
- Lane Flamm closed out the game for the Musketeers, facing three batters in 1.0 innings of work with one strike out. Flamm picked up his fourth save of the year.
