Rubber match with Red Storm set for noon on Sunday

QUEENS, N.Y. - After coming back to take an eighth inning lead, Xavier baseball fell, 9-8, at St. John's in 14 innings on Saturday afternoon. The loss was the Musketeers' first set-back in BIG EAST play as Xavier moves to 4-1 in BIG EAST play and 13-22 overall.

The 14-inning game was longest outing for Xavier baseball since May 21, 2011, an 8-4 win at Fordham.

St. John's took an early lead, holding a two run advantage until a two-run homer for Luke Franzoni in the fourth tied the game. Xavier took its first lead with a three-run top of the fifth, but SJU responded with a three-run inning of its own to tie the game. Another three run inning for the Musketeers gave Xavier a 8-5 lead headed to the bottom of the eighth.

SJU scored three in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game 8-8, with the tie game holding until the bottom of the 14 when the Red Storm scored a walk-off run on sac fly.

Xavier will return to the field at St. John's tomorrow at noon to close out the series.

XU AT THE PLATE

Jake Shepski went 3-of-7 at the plate, picking up a pair of RBIs and scoring a pair.
Matt Warkentin went 1-of-5 at the plate with a pair of walks.
Allbry Major contributed an RBI and scored a run on a two-hit day.
Jack Housinger collected two RBIs and scored a run in a 1-of-5 day at the plate, hitting a double, with a walk.
Luke Franzoni collected two on RBI on his fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning, his second-straight game with a dinger, matching Conor Grammes for second most on the team.
Kody Darcy and Conor Grammes each collected a hit and scored a run for the Musketeers. Grammes also collected an intentional walk in the 13th inning.
Luke Stephenson finished 1-of-4 and scored a run for the Musketeers.
Chris Givin got on base with a walk, one of five bases on balls for the Musketeers.
Natale Monastra came in off the bench, going 1-of-2 at the plate, including a single in the 13th inning.
Xavier finished with 12 hits on the day.

XU ON THE MOUND

Griffin Lanoue went four innings in the start, getting a pair of strike outs with allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk.he fifth inning,
Sam Czabala entered in the fifth inning and pitched three innings of two hit baseball with no runs scored. Czabala finished with one strike out and one walk in 11 batters faced.
Nick Zwack came on in the eighth, facing four batters and allowing three hits, with three runs, two earned, going against him.
Lane Flamm came in in the eighth, pitching three scoreless innings of one-hit baseball with a season-high five strikeouts.
Matt Kent came on in the 11th, pitching 3.2 innings with one earned run allowed on four hits with one strikeout.

HOW THEY SCORED

FOURTH INNING | With two walks, Jack Housinger took a walk to put one one for Luke Franzoni. Franzoni homered in a second-straight game, for his fifth of the season to tie the game at 2-2.

FIFTH INNING | Kody Darcy led off with a single to third base, and advanced to third on a Conor Grammes single. Jake Shepski singled to bring Darcy home, putting Xavier up, 3-2, and send Grammes to second.

Matt Warkentin took a walk to load the bases, and with two outs, Jack Housinger doubled to right center, scoring Grammes and Shepski to put Xavier ahead, 5-2.

SIXTH INNING | In a 5-5 tie game, Luke Stephenson led off with a single up the middle, and advanced to second on a Darcy sac bunt. With two outs, Jake Shepski singled up the middle to bring Stephenson home to put Xavier back ahead, 6-5.

Shepski stole second to get into scoring position, and came home on an Allbry Major single to center field to put Xavier ahead 7-5. Major took third on a Matt Warkentin single and a wild pitch brought Major home to push the lead back to three, 8-5.
