Justus Kauppinen scored his second goal of the season in the 23rd minute

MILWAUKEE - Xavier men's soccer picked up its first BIG EAST win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Marquette, 2-1, at Valley Fields.

The Musketeers improved to 7-4 (1-3 BIG EAST) on the year, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 4-5-1 (1-2-1 BIG EAST).

NOTABLE

• Justus Kauppinen scored his third goal of the season in the 23rd minute. The goal is the sixth of his career and his fourth in a Xavier uniform. He also added an assist, the seventh of his career (fifth in a Xavier uniform).

• Freshman Taylor Rhinehart was credited with an assist on the first goal of the match, the second of his career. Junior Karsen Henderlong recorded his second assist of the year and the fifth of his career on the Kauppinen goal.

• Redshirt-sophomore Cameron Phillips scored his first goal of the season in his first appearance of the year. He now has two career goals.

• Senior Pol Hernandez recorded his first point in a Xavier uniform with his first assist of the season, coming on the Cameron Phillips goal. He now has six career assists (transfer from Akron).

• Matthew Rosenberg (7-4) picked up the win between the pipes. The senior goalkeeper made two saves in the match.

• Xavier moves to 4-8-1 in the all-time series vs Marquette. The Musketeers picked up their first road win in the series since Oct. 25, 2014.

• Xavier held a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. The Musketeers also took four more corner kicks (10-6) in the match.

• Marquette committed five more fouls (18-13) than Xavier. The Golden Eagles also had three yellow cards.

• Justus Kauppinen led the Musketeer attack with five shots (two on goal), while Taylor Rhinehart added three (one on goal).

• Six Musketeers played all 90 minutes: Matthew Rosenberg, Taylor Crull, Justus Kauppinen, Pol Hernandez, Jansen Miller and Paul Bogarin.
