Musketeers Advance with Shootout Victory over Georgetown
05.28.22 | Baseball
Justin Loer was phenomenal to start the game. In just his third career start, the freshman threw five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits in his longest outing to date. He struck out three, and was forced to exit in the sixth inning after being hit by a comeback line drive in the leg. However, he was able to walk off the field under his own power.
Meanwhile, Xavier built up a good lead, scoring on a Luke Franzoni sac fly in the first, a Lane Flamm solo home run in the fourth, and they scored four more in the fifth with the highlight being a Jack Housinger two-run shot.
With the Musketeers in full command 6-0, Georgetown came alive with a seven-run sixth inning, capped with a grand slam to take the lead. Undeterred, Xavier got it right back with a two-out two-strike Tyler DeMartino two-run homer. Georgetown tied it in the seventh with an RBI fielders choice, but after the seventh-inning stretch, Housinger hit his second homer of the day to give Xavier the 10-8 lead.
It was a lead they wouldn't relinquish, as they scored six more runs in the eighth inning behind RBI singles from Grant Stephenson and Matt DePrey and then an Andrew Walker grand slam.
Up 16-8, Miles Halligan slammed the door for Xavier in the ninth to advance in the tournament.
The Musketeers next game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm ET tonight, but first pitch will likely be pushed back due to the length of this morning's game. They will face the loser of UConn and Creighton, who play this afternoon.
