No. 19 Women's Soccer Hosts St. John's for Senior Day on Sunday

Musketeers and St. John's set to get underway at 1 PM on FloSports
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's soccer (10-2-3; 3-0-3 BIG EAST) returns home to host St. John's on Sunday, Oct. 15, at Corcoran Field, set for 1:00 p.m. start on FloSports. The Musketeers will celebrate Senior Day prior to the match.
Xavier will honor 11 student-athletes, Madison Ayson, Grace Blumfledt, Ashley Bowles, Victoria Caparos, Olivia Lawson, Elise Le, Taylor Molli, Jane Olcott, Maddie Reed, Sonia Vargas and Abby Weller, ahead of the game. The Musketeers will also honor senior student manager, Austin Sarns.
After four weeks of conference play, Xavier, which had a bye this week, is 3-0-3 and sits in second place in the league standings with 12 points, trailing first place Georgetown's 15 points at 4-0-2. The Musketeers came in at No. 19 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Poll, are ranked in the top 25 by College Soccer News (No. 20), and come in at No. 23 in the most recent RPI.

- The Red Storm, currently sitting at 8-4- overall, were picked to finish third in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll. SJU is currently 3-3-1 in league play, sitting in fifth place in the standings. St. John's opened up league play with losses to Georgetown, UConn and Seton Hall before picking up back-to-back wins over Villanova and Creighton, played Providence to a draw and picked up a win over Butler.
- St. John's went 7-5-7 overall and 4-2-3 in BIG EAST play in 2022, earning the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Red Storm played UConn to a 1-1 draw in the BIG EAST First Round, advancing on PKs. Xavier took the 3-1 win in double overtime in the semifinals.
- The Musketeers are 3-7-1 all-time against the Red Storm.
- Xavier played the Red Storm to a 0-0 draw in Queens during the 2022 regular season, then topped St. John's 3-1 in double overtime in the Semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship. Emma Flick scored the equalizer in the 79th minute to force overtime. Molly McLaughlin knocked in the game-winner in the 95th minute and Chloe Netzel scored the third tally in the 98th minute.

- Xavier took the lead in the 31st minute, with Samantha Wiehe scoring from Sonia Vargas, to take the 1-0 lead into the half. Xavier had a 6-5 advantage on shots in the first 45 minutes, with all six looks on-frame for the Musketeers.
- In the second half, UConn held a 7-5 advantage on shots overall looking for the equalizer, but the Musketeers limited the Huskies to just two looks on-goal. Maria Galley collected both to keep the Huskies off the board on the way to the 1-0 Xavier win.
- Samantha Wiehe's first half goal was her team-high sixth of the season, and fourth game-winner. Combined with three assist, she leads the team with 15 points.
- Sonia Vargas picked up an assist on Wiehe's goal, combining with three goals for seven points on the season.
- UConn finished with a 12-11 advantage on shots but the Musketeers had a 10-4 advantage on shots on-goal. The 10 shots on-goal are the most allowed by the Huskies in 2023.

- A pair of Musketeers, Maddie Reed and Maria Galley, earned BIG EAST weekly honor after helping keep Xavier undefeated in BIG EAST play last week. Reed was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while Galley earned Goalkeeper of the Week after helping Xavier to a 0-0 draw against Georgetown and a 1-0 win at UConn to move the Musketeers to 3-0-3 in conference play. Additionally, midfielder Samantha Wiehe earned a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.
- Reed, a senior from Louisville, Ky., played the full time in both matches last week to help Xavier to a pair of shutouts. Against Georgetown, she played 90 minutes helped hold the Hoyas scoreless, limiting GU to season lows in shots (7) and shots on-goal (2). She also played the full time against UConn, helping limit the Huskies to just four shots on-goal, the lowest total for the Huskies in BIG EAST action this season.
- Galley, a sophomore from South Windsor, Conn., collected six saves for a pair of shutouts last week. Against the Hoyas, she saved both GU shots on-goal to earn her seventh shutout of the season. Against UConn, she collected all four shots on-goal for her eighth shutout of the season, which are the fifth most clean sheets in the nation and tied for most among BIG EAST goalkeepers. This is Galley's third BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honor of the season.
- Wiehe, a junior from Northfield Ohio, earned a Weekly Honor Roll nod after scoring the game-winner in the 31st minute against UConn, off a pass from Sonia Vargas, helping Xavier pick up its 10th win of the season. The goal was goal was her team-high sixth of the season, and fourth game-winner. Combined with three assists, she leads the team with 15 points.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE |
- Xavier starts a two-game road trip on Thursday, October 19, when the Musketeers head to Rhode Island to take on the Providence Friars at 6:00 PM on FloSports.
- PC is 8-2-3 overall and 3-0-3 in BIG EAST play. The Friars, who were picked seventh in the BIG EAST preseason poll, are currently tied with Xavier for second place, with wins over Seton Hall, Creighton and Marquette, and draws with Butler, DePaul and St. John's. Providence will play at Georgetown on Sunday.
- The Friars went 4-9-5 last season, with a 2-4-4 record in BIG EAST play.
- The Musketeers are 5-4-1 all-time against PC and enter 2023 with a five-match unbeaten streak in the series.
- Xavier played the Friars to a 0-0 draw in Cincinnati last season.

- Xavier, currently ranked No. 19 in the USC poll, is coming off a 14-4-5 season in 2022.
- The Musketeers went 6-0-4 in BIG EAST play to finish second in the league standings, marking the first unbeaten conference slate in program history.
