Musketeer pitchers combine for a season-high 12 strikeouts
CINCINNATIÂ - Xavier baseball completed the series sweep of Georgetown with a 9-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Musketeers moved to 27-19 overall an 11-4 in BIG EAST play with the
win.
Following the game, the Musketeers, who have been raising money for the Vs. Cancer Foundation to help support the fight against pediatric cancer nationally, shaved their heads in support of the cause. Xavier has worked with Vs. Cancer since 2014 to help support children battling cancer, raising over $100k to help accelerate the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's efforts towards a future without childhood brain cancer.Â
The Hoyas got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead after the top of the first. Jake Lambdin led off the bottom half of the inning with a single, moved to second on a ground ball, and advanced to third on a single from Connor Misch before scoring on a sac fly from Aedan Anderson to tie it at 1-1.
Xavier took control of the game in the second, scoring seven runs on six hits. Clay Burdette led off the inning with a single and Isaac Wachsmann was hit by a pitch to get the first two runners on for the Musketeers. After advancing to third on a fly ball, Burdette game home on an error to give Xavier the lead at 2-1.
Donavan Canterberry continued the inning with a single, then a triple from Lambdin drove in Wachsmann and Burdette. Carter Hendrickson cleared the bases and added two more runs with a home run down the left field line, making it a 6-1 Xavier lead.
Still in the second, Anderson was hit by a pitch, Nolan Tucker got on with a single, and in his second at-bat in the frame, Burdette was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wachsmann brought in Anderson and Tucker with a single to cap off the scoring for the inning and make it an 8-1 Xavier lead.
A solo home run from Jason Jelic in the seventh made it a 9-1 Xavier advantage. The Hoyas got the run back in the next half inning but were unable to bring in another run to set the final score at 9-2.
The Musketeers' pitching staff limited the Hoyas to just four hits overall, with only two hits allowed after the second inning, while combining for a season-high 12 strikeouts on the way to the win.
Xavier remains at home to continue a seven-game homestand, hosting Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday, April 30, set for a 3:00 p.m. start at Hayden Field.

- Jake Lambdin finished 3-4 with a walk, driving in two RBI with a triple in the second. He finished with a pair of runs scored.

- Nolan Tucker (1-4) also finished with a run scored.
- Connor Misch and Landon Mensik both recorded hits on a 14-hit day for the Musketeers.
