Musketeers set season-high for runs scored and hits in first game of doubleheader
CINCINNATI -Â Xavier baseball split a Saturday doubleheader with No. 20 UConn, taking game one with a season-high scoring output, taking the 18-8 win. UConn took the series 2-1 after scoring four runs in the ninth to take the 11-9 win. Xavier wraps up the weekend at 22-14 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST play.
In the first game, Xavier opened up with a big inning, scoring four runs on four hits, including a solo home run from Jack Housinger and a two-run homer from Matt McCormick. Connecticut cut it to 4-2 in the next frame, but a Grant Stephenson home run pushed the lead back to three, 5-2.
The Huskies tied it up in the third, and the Musketeers retook the lead on a Tyler DeMartino home run in the third, then added five runs on six hits in the fourth to lead 11-5.
UConn would get as close as 11-8 in the sixth, but Xavier added runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth, capped by a two-run home run for Andrew Walker in the eighth to set the final score at 18-8.
In game two the Huskies struck first, getting a pair of runs in the second, but Xavier scored four in the bottom of the frame, including a three-run home run from Jared Cushing. UConn retook the lead at 5-4 in the third but an RBI single from Carter Hendrickson tied it in the bottom of the inning.
Each team added a run in the fifth, with Xavier scoring on a Tyler DeMartino homer, and UConn added a run in ths sixth to move ahead 7-6.
Xavier scored a pair in the seventh on a two-run home run from Matt McCormick to take the lead and made it a 9-7 lead in the eighth on a home run from Grant Stephenson. UConn responded with a four-run ninth inning to set the final score at 11-9.
Xavier wrapped up its Vs. Cancer Pledge it Campaign this weekend, finishing the seven game stretch with 80 hits and 48 hits.
Xavier heads to No. 11 Kentucky on Tuesday, April 18, set for a 6:30 first pitch on SEC Network+.
