Mancuso led the Musketeers with two goals
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's lacrosse fell to No. 3 Denver 23-6 on Sunday afternoon.
The Musketeers fall to 4-8 (0-4 BIG EAST), while the Pioneers advance to 15-0 (4-0 BIG EAST).
• Lola Mancuso posted the team-high of two goals in the contest - each unassisted. The freshman attacker increased her career total to 36 goals.
• Four additional Musketeers tallied goals against the ranked opponent - junior midfielder Sawyer Walker, sophomore midfielder Julie Cassidy, graduate midfielder Jessica Harrison, and freshman attack Molly Smith. Cassidy and Smith went 1-1 on free position goals.
• Freshman midfielder Erin Berls and graduate attacker Riley Halloran each recorded an assist for the Musketeers.
• Sawyer Walker recorded the team-high four draw controls, setting a new career high.
• Graduate defender Hannah McFeeters posted two caused turnovers against Denver, the team-high, with freshman midfielder Kiera Armitage recording one.
• The team-high of three ground balls was shared between McFeeters, freshman goalkeeper Marina Piszczor, and freshman midfielder Katelyn McDonnell.
• Freshman goalkeeper Jada Brandon recorded 10 saves in 30 minutes of goal time - a career high.
• Piszczor also contributed 10 saves in 30 minutes of goal time against the Pioneers.
• The Musketeers totaled six goals, two assists, eight draw controls, and 16 ground balls.
The Musketeers will return to action Wednesday, April 19 when they close out the home slate with Villanova. First draw set for 1:00 p.m. EST from Corcoran Field.
Today, five different players scored on our six goals. Our goalies came up with big saves and even bigger ground balls. The entire team battled out the 50/50 balls from end to end. We grew as an attacking unit on our decision making. Our transition game was the best it's been all season and we did it against the #3 team in the country.
Denver is a team that will be competing far into May this year. They dominated the draw circle from a lot of different angles. We got our opportunities off our defensive stops, not off the draw circle. Not having the ball off the draw cuts our offensive opportunities significantly. I know our players loved the competition out there today. Denver challenged us all over the field and I like what we did under that pressure.
Building a program is an adventure from every angle. Seeing each Big East team this year and how we are stacking up has been a big part of that adventure. What our young team did today in the 60 minutes of game time puts us exactly where we need to be from a growth perspective. Today, we were better than we've ever been and we haven't seen our best yet this year.
Thank you to all the fans and staff at the game today! We are looking forward to Villanova this week for our Senior Day game and showing gratitude to the graduate students who will be leaving us after this incredible first year.
