I loved what our team did today. With 11 freshmen, one sophomore, two juniors, and three grad students on the field and an incredible sideline crew, Xavier lacrosse was stamped all over this game today. Marquette has a very seasoned team, not a single freshman in their starting lineup and the majority of their production across the field coming from upperclassmen.
Marquette has been having a great season this year, no doubt about it. We took out their top scorer and held her to one of her lowest production games of the season. Marquette has a great senior defender on the draw circle with one of the quickest first steps I've seen. Quite honestly, her work off the draw put us a huge disadvantage. The draw score ended up being the game score.
As far as Xavier goes, it was our best second-half of the year. We beat Marquette in shots, ground balls, clear percentage, and tied on the draw circle. Our shooting percentage in the first half was 75% and fell off in the second half but we increased the amount of shots we took. We had 5 turnovers in the second half which is a 50% improvement on our average.
The players out there today wearing Xavier across their chest were only scratching the surface of their potential as rookie players and they held up well against seasoned veterans who are wrapping up their careers. I like the future of Xavier in the Big East.
